Consistently for the past several years, our partners have obtained multi-million dollar settlements, and even larger judgments, on behalf of our plaintiff clients, and defense verdicts on behalf of our defendant clients. As one of many examples, in 2011, our partner, Charles Harder, obtained a whopping judgment following a 19-day trial in the LA County Superior Court. The client, an independent film production company, was sued for $3.5 million by a film producer. Mr. Harder, on behalf of the client, countersued for $13 million. The trial verdict was one-sided: Mr. Harder won a complete defense verdict on the producer’s claims, and won an $18 million judgment for the client on its counterclaims, including reimbursement of attorneys’ fees. The client also won valuable film rights to several motion pictures including The Departed and Shutter Island.
As a second example, our partner Douglas Mirell represented Woody Allen in a right of publicity dispute with American Apparel. The ensuing lawsuit settled on the morning before the first day of trial for a $5 million payment to Mr. Allen for the unauthorized use of his image on two billboards and briefly on the company’s website.
In achieving major settlements, we use our expertise in alternative dispute resolution, including our partner Jeffrey Abrams’ experience as a former professional mediator in over 500 litigated disputes.
We strive every day to achieve the best possible result for our clients, and we do so in a cost-effective way, so that the net result for the client is as favorable as possible. Obviously each case is different and there are never any guarantees of future success, but we endeavor in every case to be strategically aggressive, to slay dragons for our clients, and champion their goals and interests.
